Shift handover checklist: six details the next team needs
A reliable handover explains the current state, unfinished work, risks, ownership, and the next action. Use this checklist to make every changeover concise and actionable.
[ The checklist ]
What every shift handover should contain
Keep each item specific enough for the incoming team to decide and act without chasing the outgoing team for missing context.
- 01
Current shift status
Summarise what is running normally, what changed, and what needs immediate attention.
- 02
Open work and next action
List unfinished tasks with a clear status, priority, and next step.
- 03
Risks, incidents, and exceptions
Record anything that could affect safety, service, quality, or the next team.
- 04
Owner and deadline
Name the responsible person and the time by which the next action is expected.
- 05
Supporting documents
Attach the procedure, photo, note, or file needed to understand the item.
- 06
Incoming acknowledgement
Confirm that the incoming team reviewed the handover and knows what comes next.
